OK Go Music Video Analysis
1. What has happened to their videos over time?
Through time, some elements of their music videos have stayed the same. All four members always feature in each video, they always appear as one take, block/bold colours are used as well as unison and symmetry. It's these elements that would engage an audience and keep them watching even though there isn't a variety of different shots throughout. In their first music videos, it's evident they have small budgets as in Here It Goes Again it's just them and 8 treadmills and in A Million Ways they are just dancing and singing in a garden. However, as perhaps their budget grew and technology advanced, each music video stood to outdo the innovative concept of their last. For all of their music videos, one location was used - normally a warehouse. However, the audience wouldn't even realise this as the optical illusions that take place in such flawless succession keep their attention throughout. One thing that is interesting about their music videos, is that the illusions they create are not done with technology or SFX, like stated at the beginning of their Upside Down & Inside Out music video, which perhaps becomes their unique selling point. As technology advances more things are becoming possible which makes the music industry more competitive, but by OK Go creating these videos with low budgets but optical brilliance, their music videos become more engaging than many more famous artists.
2. Why do you think they choose to make videos like this?
OK Go are not majorly well known and are limited to smaller budgets. However, by creating these types of music videos they create a USP for themselves. Each video aims to better the last one, which would leave fans eager to see what their next video will be. In consequence, it means that the fans are more likely to share the videos and their audience will grow. One thing that's credible to this band is that although they have a smaller budget, the creativeness and how innovative their videos are continue to exceed expectations. The videos are supposedly done in one take, but their conceptual ideas makes them gripping for audiences and don't seem to be targeted toward any particular age group or subculture. For a band that's music is described as both Alternative Rock and Pop Rock, the boldness and bright colours challenge the stereotypes of that genre of music and are likely to attract a more diverse range of people. In todays society, optical illusions that take place throughout their music videos are likely to go viral on Facebook, which would only continue to grow their audience.
